Blogs have become an integral part of online culture. And it’s only in the past five to ten years that they’ve really taken off and become an important part of the online landscape.
In the early Years. It's generally recognized that the first blog was Links.net, created by Justin Hall, while he was a Swarthmore College student in 1994. At that time it was known as a personal homepage and It wasn't until 1997 that the term “weblog” was coined
“Weblog” was shortened to “blog” in 1999 by programmer Peter Merholz. It’s not until five years later that Merriam-Webster declares the word their word of the year.

History of blogging
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While the term "blog" was not coined until the late 1990s, the history of blogging starts with several digital precursors to it. Before "blogging" became popular, digital communities took many forms, including Usenet, commercial online services such as GEnie, BiX and the early CompuServe, e-mail lists[1] and Bulletin Board Systems (BBS). In the 1990s, Internet forum software, such as WebEx, created running conversations with "threads"
Players in the field
The early 2000s were a period of growth for blogs. In 1999, according to a list compiled by Jesse James Garrett, there were 23 blogs on the internet. By the middle of 2006, there were 50 million blogs according to Technorati‘s State of the Blogosphere report
Why do people blog ?
- Blogging has quickly become one of the most popular ways of communicating and spreading information and news. There are literally millions of blogs online (don’t worry, you can make yours stand out and get noticed!).
- It’s a great way to express yourself and also a fantastic way to share information with others.
- You become a better person and a better writer.
- The best reason? You can make money doing it!
Ever since the inception of blogging, the internet has seen varied experimentation and trends when it comes to the layouts and design of blogs. we have the traditional WordPress themes with a sidebar, popularized by the good old Kubrick, whereas we also have the single-column themes focusing heavily on support for post formats.
Competition
Blogging took a while to catch on before becoming immensely popular overnight. Blog usage spread during 1999 and following years, thanks to the near-simultaneous creation of the first hosted blog tools:
– Open Diary (1998): online diaries that invited the reader to comment on entries.
– LiveJournal (1999)
– Pitas.com (1999): an easier alternative to maintaining news pages on websites.
– Blogger.com (1999): later purchased by Google in 2003.

If you’re interested in creating your own blog from scratch, you’ll need to come up with a theme or a general topic for your writing that you can focus on in future posts, otherwise your blog will just end up being another one among the millions.
To be a successful blogger, it’s important to write good quality content, so if you’re unsure what to write about and you find yourself sitting staring at the blank computer screen, don’t post a blog that day or don’t blog. Good luck!!
